Starnut -- McLean, VA

As far as I know, there is no other place quite like the Starnut in McLean, VA. They serve a coffee popular in Europe. They sell nuts and chocolate. They sell trinkets. They serve wine and beer. They have salads and sandwiches. Children (and adults) go there for the gelatto. They have international newspapers for reading on the premises for free, and they have an assortment of U.S. newspapers they ask you to purchase if you want to read them. They have an afternoon tea, which I haven't yet experienced.

To be honest, the limited food selection is not why I, or anyone else, go there. We go because it is a nice place for the non-Starbucks crowd to go and hang out. It is a nice place to go and do nothing, other than sipping coffee or wine.

Joe, the owner, has the right personality for his place. He knows everybody's name. He is friendly, but not in the intrusive, back-slapping way. Joe's Starnut is like the friendly neighborhood bar, but with less emphasis on the alcohol. Go.
